Driftwood, by nature, is generally smooth and sun bleached. Many days spent tumbling in the surf and baking on the sand give driftwood its classic look. But there are some varieties of wood that maintain their deep colors, or become even darker as time goes on. Wood like this is less available, which makes this piece truly special.
This 30 inch mirrored driftwood wreath is bold, earthy, and wonderfully unique. In the midst of thick, chunky driftwood, a large 12 inch mirror reflects the perfect cross sections of nearly 200 pieces and 3 layers of hand picked driftwood in a variety of deep colors and textures. Each layer of driftwood decreases in length, making for a beautifully dramatic finished look. You are able to see and admire each piece of driftwood used in this magnificent work of art.
When shoppers look at pieces similar to this one, they ask if I have taken a tool, after the wreath is built, and shaped the perfect circle inside. I am flattered, because the answer is no. Each piece is cut and sanded based on where it sits within the circle. While driftwood is natural and imperfect, this finished piece IS perfectly stunning.
This mirror is built on a sturdy 20 inch (1/8 inch thick) circular wooden board. It hangs by a strong (4 mm thick) cotton cord that is secured through the board. The hanger will not be seen when the mirror in placed on the wall. I would suggest using a mount such as an angled picture hanger for easiest and most secure hanging.
Each piece of driftwood is glued using a variety of industrial strength adhesives. I do not use nails or screws. I find that this better maintains the integrity of the wood. Each piece of driftwood is secured at many points to its neighboring pieces which gives structure and durability to the finished wreath.
